Improvements to Rockford City Market Home Taking Shape

ROCKFORD — Improvements to the Water Street parking lot, which is home to Rockford City Market in warmer weather months, have started to take shape.
Construction workers started raising beams this week on the pavilion that will cover 37 of the lots' 63 parking spaces on non-market days.
The parking deck closed after a small portion collapsed in August. The city opted to replace the former two-level deck at Water and State streets with a surface lot designed to be more conducive to City Market. Stenstrom was hired in January for $792,100 to complete the work.
The goal is for construction to finish in time for Rockford City Market to kick off its 2015 season on May 22. The market had more than 75,000 visitors in 2014.
