Customers looking to satisfy their dessert and music cravings can now visit Kate’s Pie Shop, which opened a storefront this past weekend inside Mendelssohn Hall. The business started selling pie and vinyl records at last year’s City Market. Kate Sullivan and Stu Patterson co-own the business. Sullivan is the baker, who specializes in making classic, homemade pies, and Patterson is the avid record collector. When she delivers pies to customers, Sullivan dresses up as “the pie lady” wearing vintage-style dresses. The shop is located at 406 N. Main St. Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center bought the former First Presbyterian Church space last year, and Kate’s Pie Shop can be accessed from the Main Street entrance across from Beattie Park. Pie flavors include apple, pecan, French silk, coconut cream, triple berry, caramel apple and apple cranberry. Some pies have especially creative names like Buzzsaw Bourbon. Prices range from $3.75 to $4 for slices, $5 for empanadas and $8.99 to $22 for various pie sizes. The shop also sells vinyl records, mostly in the punk, rock, blues, rockabilly and classic country genres. Sullivan and Patterson have started collecting and selling new vinyl because they had been selling records from their own collection. Sullivan said the business will still participate in the Edgebrook Farmers Market on Wednesdays, Rockford City Market on Fridays and Grayslake Farmers Market on Saturdays when they start again this spring and summer. The storefront will be open most often from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sullivan said they’re still tweaking the hours, so she suggested customers call first before they stop by or look for the sandwich board outside the shop. Kate’s Pie Shop also has a donation fund set up at kickstarter.com to help raise money for the new storefront. Visit katespieshop.com or call 815-298-7009 for more information. You can also “like” the business on Facebook.
